Pousada History:
Vila Nova de Cerveira was established by the King D. Dinis in October 1st 1321, who also ordered the construction of the castle that still dominates the central area of the population.
The consolidation of V. N. Cerveira as a tourist destination is supported in products of great historical and cultural relevance, as the Mountain and chapel of Espirito Santo, where there are visible remaining portions of a defensive system, seem to be of Celtic origin. Also important is the S. Cipriano Church, from the 19th century, but with previous vestiges from the 16th century, and the Chapel of S. Roque, built after the 1564 plague. Solar dos Castros is an interesting building from the 18th century.
The castle’s construction was ordered by the King D. Dinis and has seven towers, still well preserved, thanks to the 1940's restoration works. Inside the castle, there's the Misericordia Church, Senhora da Ajuda Chapel, the old Court, the Chain and the Pillory. The Pousada D. Diniz was built inside the former wall from the 18th century, becoming a Pousada in September 3rd 1982. The rooms and suites are situated in independent blocks and some of them have small terraces with full privacy for its occupants. From the walls the visitors can enjoy a magnificent view over the Minho River.
