1. Castle of Guimarães

Guimarães: 54 Km from Oporto, 365 Km from Lisbon

The Castle of Guimarães was ordered to be built by Dona Mumadona Dias in the 10th century in order to defend its monastery from Muslim and Norman attacks.
In 1910 this Castle was declared a national monument.
In 1937, the General Service for National Buildings and Monuments started its great restoration, which concluded with the inauguration of the castle's present symbolic status on June 4, 1940.

2. Monastery of Batalha

The Monastery of Batalha was built in answer to a vow made by King John I to the Virgin, if the Castillian's invader were defeated in the Battle of Aljubarrota. Elected by UNESCO as World Heritage, it is a grand monument to the closing phase of Portuguese Gothic whose building began in 1388.

3. Castle of Óbidos

Óbidos Village: 295 Km from Guimarães, 83 Km from Lisbon

In 1148 Dom Afonso Henriques recaptured the town from the Moors. Later in 1282, the King of Portugal Dom Dinis made a wedding present of the town Óbidos to his new wife Dona Isabel. At that time the town was a important trading port but in the 16th Century the river access silted up and destroyed its previous trade. In the main church within its walls the later to be King, Dom Afonso V at the tender age of ten was married his young cousin Dona Isabel who at the time was also only
 eight years old.

4. Monastery of Alcobaça

Óbidos Village: 295 Km from Guimarães, 83 Km from Lisbon

The Monastery of Alcobaça is one of the first foundations of the Order of Cistercians in Portugal. It was founded in 1153 as a gift to Bernard of Clairvaux, shortly before his death, from the first Portuguese King, Afonso Henriques, to commemorate his victory over the Moors at Santarém in March 1147.
The foundation of the monastery was part of the strategy by Afonso Henriques to consolidate his authority in the new kingdom and promote the colonisation of areas recently taken from Moorish hands during the Reconquista. Its is World Heritage site considered by UNESCO.

5. Belém Tower, in Lisbon

Lisbon: 365 Km from Guimarães

Belém Tower was built in the Age of the Discoveries in tribute to the patron saint of the city, Saint Vicente.

In 1983 UNESCO classified it as a World Heritage Site.
